Since sacramental celebration is a faith community event and since the family is the core of the faith community, sacramental preparation needs to take place in both settings. The Church, the larger faith community is responsible for supporting parents in nurturing their child’s faith in providing ongoing catechesis in doctrine developed through Scripture and Tradition.
It is an awesomely wonderful venture of relationship! The Church has long held that parents/guardians are the primary educators of their children. This is a time of obvious growth in faith for children, but also an opportunity for parents to renew and deepen their personal faith as they engage in this process with their children.
At your child’s Baptism, you promised God
“…to … make it your constant care to bring
your child up in the practice of the faith.”
Reconciliation: The Sacrament of Reconciliation is about the mercy of Jesus Christ. Honestly confessing our sins reconciles us to God and restores us to his grace and intimate friendship.
Confession breaks the power of shame and hurt of sin, and restores and revitalizes our relationships within the community of faith in the life of our Church.
Eucharist: The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. When we faithfully receive the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, we grow deeper in communion with God and fellowship with one another.
Who we are: St. Thomas the Apostle Parish Sacramental Preparation program is designed for all parish children in the second grade. Sacramental preparation is not just for your child’s First Reconciliation and First Eucharist; it is preparation for a lifetime that only begins with these Sacraments. St. Thomas the Apostle Parish is your partner in this preparation, and is committed to supporting you the domestic church in your responsibility as Christian parents.
Meeting time and place: Sacramental Preparation classes for second graders meet on Sunday from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on the second floor of St. Thomas the Apostle School.
What we do: We prepare second graders for First Reconciliation, and First Eucharist; and to help them appreciate God’s love for them shown in these two sacraments. There is an added emphasis about the liturgy and on prayer. In preparation of these sacraments, children will build a relationship with God, will learn the laws of God, Bible stories, Creation, redemption, salvation history, with emphasizes of God’s mercy and love. We provide a safe environment and a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our interactive lessons strive to strike a balance between the things our children like to know and do, and the things they need to know.
- Children in grade 2 preparing to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist must be baptized and register for our Sacramental Program.
- Parents must provide a certificate of Baptism prior to receiving the sacraments.
- All children must participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Penance prior to receiving the Eucharist.
