The sacrament of Confirmation is a milestone in one’s life of faith, a turning point in which the gifts of the Holy Spirit flow into our hearts and minds. We cease to be children and stand initiated as adults in full-standing in Christ’s Body, the Church.
Who we are: St. Thomas the Apostle Confirmation Class draws on the Catechism of the Catholic Church in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. With a fun and conversational style, we focus on the substance of the great story of salvation, the drama of the Covenant People.
What we do: St. Thomas the Apostle Confirmation Program is a friendly and openminded class where we tell the grand narrative of our faith:
- we invite the students to place themselves within that history, and to take their role within God’s plan of redemption,
- we explore spiritual practices and the Church’s yearly liturgical drama,
- we explore the Catholic faith in an intimate and deeply personal spiritual journey that will prepare the students to remain steadfast and faithful to their identities as young Catholics,
- we guide the students in a process of picking up a Confirmation Sponsor and a Confirmation Name,
- we participate in an afternoon retreat near the end of Lent at the nearby Holy Cross Monastery, and more.
How do we meet: Classes begin in October and are 9:45 a.m.-10:50 a.m. most Sundays (according to the schedule).
Requirements: For 7th through 8th Grades and Junior High / Young Adult

“Holiness is the normal path for Christians; it is not reserved for a few chosen ones but is open to all. Naturally, with the light and strength of the Holy Spirit whom we will not lack if we hold out our hands and open our hearts!”
Pope Benedict XVI, 2012.

Confirmation Class Welcome Letter
Dear Parents and Students,
Thank you for reaching out to St Thomas Parish and for your efforts to prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation!
STA’s Confirmation course begins each year in late September or early October. This year we start Sunday, October 7. We meet regularly in the mornings between the masses, at 9:45am-10:50am in Room 110.
On Oct 7, the Instructors will also be in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30-9:45am & 12-12:30pm and the 8:30am and 11:00am Masses. Come meet the instructors, pick up a Course Packet, hear about the course.
The instructors are Austin Walker, Kaitlin Hassenbeck-Meyer, and myself (Robert Porwoll). Austin and I have taught the course for the past three years and are happy to have Kaitlin, an experienced catechist and director of religious education, join us.
The course aims to prepare confirmandi (those to be confirmed) with a mature understanding of the faith and with familiarity with the devotional life of the faithful. For the former, the course surveys the story of God’s people, from Creation, through the Covenants, to the New Covenant in Christ, and the sacramental life of the Church, and final things. For the latter, we also memorize Scripture, conduct opening prayers, introduce devotions, discuss the Christian year, arrange a special Teaching Mass, and host the students for an afternoon retreat for prayer, discussion and confession at the nearby Holy Cross Benedictine Monastery.
Unusual circumstances have delayed the leadership team from finalizing our plans until recently. I apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience. During the delay, we’ve been able to plan the year further ahead of time.
Attached to this email is a packet outlining the course, its activities, and two necessary steps for Confirmation (Sponsorship and Saint). Please read it over.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
In Christ through Mary,
