The first evidence of a Eucharistic procession on the feast of Corpus Christi (since Vatican II, titled The Most Holy Body and Blood of Our Lord) dates back to the thirteenth century. We continue this devotion here at St. Thomas the Apostle as a way to “give public witness to faith” and our belief in the real presence of the risen Christ in the Eucharistic Bread and Wine (Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass, no. 101). June 11 marks the beginning of the parish stage of the National Eucharistic Revival, which the USCCB kicked-off in June 2022 and this procession is a festive way to enter into this year of delving into the riches of Eucharistic theology. In his book The Liturgical Year, Adolf Adam reminds us that we are a pilgrim Church and that the pilgrim journey cannot succeed without the presence of our Lord (p. 173). This procession reminds us of this lifelong journey and provides a prayerful way to contemplate the ways we live as Eucharistic people in the world. When the procession is celebrated well, and flowing from the Eucharistic liturgy itself, the community of faith bears witness to the whole world that no one is alone on this earthly journey. Our Eucharistic Lord goes before us, goes beside us, and behind us as we make our way to eternal union with him. Plan to join us for this festive prayer and procession. May we be forever nourished by the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ
